Jim S. was one those select few clients who actually stopped by our showroom! That does not surprise us. It is just that many of our client’s are referred to us through word-of-mouth or the internet. Jim S. lives nearby our showroom and decided to drop in back in February 2009.
We went to his house to do a survey of the room he wanted a home theater in. It was a perfect room for a home theater. A rectangular room with a door access on the side plus a closet for the components. He wanted a nice theater but wanted to keep his budget is a certain price range. After considering his needs and wants we presented him with a proposal that he could not refuse. We packaged a system that met his budget and allowed for our input on aesthetics, chair riser, and acoustics. He subcontracted out trim work and put his own sweat equity into the project.
Entertainment Technology prewired the home theater for a 7.1 system. We used an Elan home theater wall plate and Elan speaker wall plates to give a high-end finished appeal (instead of a tangle mess of wires). We also used conduit and HDMI cables so this system can easily be upgraded in the future.
We installed Wirepath Powerlinkul recessed 110v electrical wallplate kits to distribute “surge protected” power to the projector and subwoofer. We plugged all components into an APC 8-outlet surge protector. The utility closet at the end of the home theater was used to hide a Control4 C4-HC200 theater controller, Onkyo TX-SR576 A/V 7.1 channel receiver, Sony BDP-S550 1080p Blu-Ray player, and client’s Comcast cable box. We automated the Control4 remote for easy one-touch operation.
We installed a fixed Dragonfly 110″ matte white film screen w/black velvet frame (16:9 aspect ratio) on the front wall. We installed a Monitor Audio BRLCR center channel speaker below the projection screen. We also installed (2) Monitor Audio BR5 (3-way 5½” tower speakers) on the left and right side of the projection screen. To finish off the surround sound system we installed (4) Episode dual 4″ in-wall 2-way bipole/dipole speakers in the rear and side walls. The final addition of an Episode C5-SUB10 10″ powered subwoofer gave the room punch.
What really made an impact was the installation of a Viewsonic PRO8100 1080p LCD projector with a Strong projector mount. To help the ambiance even further we added (3) Control4 light dimmers to control lighting from the automated remote. This project really demonstrates that a nice home theater can be had with a limited budget and sweat equity.
